Named for the Golden Gate Strait that it hovers over, this famous suspension bridge is a wonder of engineering and San Francisco's signature sight.


ALCATRAZ ISLAND
Once a prison, now a fascinating tourist attraction with a rich history, this compact island is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is overseen by the National Park Service. Visitors can reach Alcatraz via a 15-minute ferry ride from Pier 33.
